What Your Bookstagram Wrapped Says About You

by Victoria Bromley

The last day of November meant Spotify released our yearly listening habits. But the real personality test is not how much Taylor Swift you listened to this year, but which books took your top spots.

All readers can be defined by their reading tastes, and even though many like to dabble in different genres, we all have our favourite books. Here we categorise the different readers we find on Bookstagram, and how your yearly bookish habits define you.

The Emily Henry Super Fan

This year you read Beach Read, You and me on Vacation, and were first in the queue to buy Book Lovers on its publication day. Emily Henry is not just for summer, and you will read these books anytime of year. She’s the author you immediately go to when a friend asks for a book recommendation. Your Bookstagram is full of bright colours to match the vibrancy of Henry’s books.

The Dark Academia Fiend

You definitely read The Secret History, If We Were Villains, and Bunny this year, and you probably read them all in January. It goes without saying that you thrive off academic validation, and we hope the PhD is going well.

Only Reads Books That Will Make Them Ugly Cry

Please stop re-reading A Little Life, it’s not healthy. Other books which are probably in your top 5 of the year include A Thousand Splendid Suns, Betty, and Shuggie Bain. Please prioritise your mental health and take a break from these traumatic texts.

The Unashamed Colleen Hoover Fanatic

You don’t have a bad word to say about the BookTok sensation Colleen Hoover. From Ugly Love to Reminders of Him, you’ve read them all. When anyone posts a negative review, you’re there to fend off the haters. Romance is your genre of choice, but after reading Verity, you’re venturing into thrillers. But sometimes you find yourself scrolling through TikTok instead of reading your book, trying to find more to add to your never ending tbr.

Would Even Read Sally Rooney’s Shopping List if They Could

As well as re-reading all of Sally Rooney’s novels, and watching the TV adaptations, this year, you were on the hunt for books about dysfunctional friendships and toxic relationships. Cleopatra and Frankenstein was a hit for you, as well as Expectation, and Topics of Conversation. Any book where the characters’ habits are questionable, and you are there.

The Only Reads Crime Culprit

We all have our genre of choice, of course we do. But for those who read crime novels, that really is all they read. You started with the likes of Clare Mackintosh and Lee Child, and now whenever you walk into a bookshop you bypass fiction and go straight to the crime section. This year you read an ungodly amount of Linwood Barclay, and that’s OK.

Anything With a Plot Twist and You’re There

This is a difficult category to be in because how would you know the book has a plot twist if you haven’t read it yet? But low and behold, we have the perfect answer: Bookstagram. If anyone raves about a book that has a shocking, out of this world plot twist, it goes straight onto your Amazon Wishlist. Doesn’t even matter what the book is about, if it has a twist, you’re going to read it. Your top books this year were most likely Eleanor Oliphant is Completely Fine, Behind her eyes and The silent patient. You love that thrill and excitement, that deceit and mystery.

Only Reads the Classics

If you are the type of person who only thinks the classics are real literature, then your top authors of 2022 probably consist of Jane Austen, all three Bronte sisters, and Daphne Du Maurier. There’s nothing wrong with sticking to the classics, they’re classics for a reason. But don’t you need a break every now and then to read a trashy romance or cosy crime thriller?

YA ‘Till You Die

It goes without saying that you devoured The First to Die at the End when it came out. You loved They Both Die at the End before the hype, and will read anything by Adam Silvera, Alice Oseman, and Jenny Han. This year you reread all the Heartstopper graphic novels and watched the series over five times (in one week).
